In our yard, we have cardinals, robins, sparrows, mourning doves, songbirds, and golden finches.  Can't stand the # of blackbirds that visit.  Want to give the blackbirds the big SCRAM....

Well, if you ever find out how, let me know!  By Blackbirds, do you mean Starlings, Cowbirds, or Grackles? Starlings are the biggest pest bird in my book. They are not Native which is the main reason they are pests.

Looks like a Brewer's blackbird.  I found one of the better half's long lost golf balls in the backyard.  So..now and then, I toss the golfball at a blackbird.  believe me, I'd never make the major leagues..in golf or baseball.  Usually..I let a good cuss word out at them..but they always return.  Can't tell ya what I shout, but you get the idea.

Trust me, I know what you mean. Blackbirds can be a pain because they are agressive and the come in very large numbers at this time of the season. They eat a lot too! As the months pass by the flocks will disperse into pairs and they will begin building their nests, so you wont find very many. In the meantime, there are cetain feeders that you can buy (I have a hopper feeder that closes under too much weight). What type of food are you feeding? Blackbirds will eat anything, but they arent as keen on black oil sunflower seed (in the shell). If you're not feeding that, give it a try. Good luck!

Those are Grackles Rose. There has been a number of sick ones in our area, they stumble around, act drunk and have found some dead ones, DNR said they thought they had gotten into spoiled food, also have a white poopy rears, gross! I have only seen this so far in the Grackles.

We also had a problem with Crackles, Starlings, Redwing Blackbirds Crows and Squirrels here in Suffolk VA. I only use safflower and Thistle in all my feeders to attrack desirable birds. When the Blackbirds and squirrels started getting hungry and hitting them, I decided to put out a feeder filled only with corn. This seemed to attrack the Blackbirds and obviously the Squirrels. When I saw that they were only hitting the corn feeed and leaving the others alone, I got the idea to move it across the street into the woods, and it's working. When I don't have corn, I fill it with the generic wild bird feed you get from Walmart that is cheap and has a lot of corn it. Since I've been filling the feeder across the street, they've pretty much stayed out of my feeders in the yard. They do make an occasional run through my bird baths, but usually just one or two at a time, not in hoards like they were around the feeders. Hope this helps.

Hello - I am having problems with swarms/flocks of birds - black grackles and the dusty grey/brown birds (I have seen them in Central America) that are the same size - they have chased off my cardinals, finches, a small group of beautiful black and yellow/orange-ish breasted birds, and even the red-winged black birds and sparrows.

The thing is, I do not have a feeder or put feed out - never did (but they did find the compost pile). We planted sod very late in the spring, early summer - and it needs to keep wet as we don't want to lose it. AND, to top-off this craziness, BESIDES the "swarming" on the new, wet grass, they have found our pool.

We have a swimming pool and one afternoon, my family was in the pool, splashing - and I guess those birds took notice - and now we've got bird poo all around the pool and in the pool, feathers and down inside the pool, they're standing on the rim and drinking the pool water - I know it's hot and everything needs water, even these birds - I can't quit watering the grass, it's too young to stop the "everyday" watering - and the kids have been waiting to play in the pool all winter and want to swim - but these "swarms" of birds scare them to death, let alone they may give them an infection from whatever disease/microbes is in their poop and such (I know this because one yr our dog started hemorrhaging and wouldn't stop, we took him to the vet where he ran tests. Come to find out, he (dog) had contracted a type of virus from eating bird poo and if we had let it go for another couple hours, the dog would have been dead - strange, but true)-

Can anyone help with this situation, any ideas? - besides the obvious, which would be to close the pool and cut down on watering the yard and have an expensive yard of dead grass - seems hopeless to me.

I've done the regular loud noises to chase them off - they are used to it now so it does not work anymore - they only move to the perimeter of the property when I come out and wait till I go back in the house to advance again. In my frustration and desperation, I have thought of a gun - but we don't own one and never will. lol... What to do??? HELP! LOL Our temps all week will be in the triple digits... I really don't want to "grin and bear it" -

Sorry for the ranting/raving and Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

I am fairly new to birding, and have a feeder that has openings that close under the weight of heavier birds/ squirrels. Other than changing my seed, do you have any other suggestions for dettering blackbirds? I have an overabundance of Brewer's Blackbirds, and they're really starting to grate on my nerves. I am reluctant to adjust the springs on my feeder, because I have a family of Blue Jays in my yard that I enjoy. The Brewer's Blackbirds are about the same size, maybe slightly larger than my Jays. I don't want to get rid of the Jays as they frequently "stand up" to the blackbirds and allow the cardinals, finches, sparrows, and others to spend some time at my feeder...
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!
